Spode

Spode was founded in 1770 by Josiah Spode, who started in the pottery trade at the age of 16. Josiah worked with many of the best potters that Stoke-on-Trent had to offer, before he decided to start his own company.

Josiah Spode redefined the pottery industry with two revolutionary acheivements

1. The development of a winning formula for fine bone
china.

2. The perfection of blue under-glaze printing.

In 1778 Spode made another landmark decision when they opened a shop and show room in London, as they were getting invaluable information direct from their customers. This allowed Spode to manufacture ware that their customers actually wanted.
